Before you leave a fire there are a few steps to take.
Extinguishing the fire completely:
Ensure you spread out the embers and the ash to help speed up the cooling down process.
Pour water over the fire until the hissing sound stops. NEVER throw the water on the fire, this could cause a swell of smoke causing danger to those around you. Start off by pouring the water on the outer edge of the fire, slowly working your way into the middle.
After the hissing has stopped, use a stick to move the ashes and ensure everything has been coated with water and there is no heat left, check with hand hovering over the fire, do not touch, to see if you feel heat from any area of the fire.
Fire safety equipment should either be completely removed from site or stored away safely and securely.
Before leaving the site, complete a final check. There are no burning embers on the ground, nothing left burning or warmth in the fire pit, no resources left on site. Also ensure there is no litter or food left over from your session.
I poured water from a bottom starting from the outside and working my way in. I then removed the wood from the firepit and ensured they were cold and replaced them back to be reused for next time.

Nothing left in the firepit but ash.
