Timber Hitch

A Timber Hitch is one of the simplest knots, it helps fully secure and can help to create different lashings, great for holding tarps or building bridges. It's a simple twisting action that creates a firm fix point.

Start off with the rope out and untangled.

Wrap the working end around the item/tree and overlap the top

Then go back on yourself going under the rope.

Looping the rope under the rope against tree and bringing it out up above.

Repeat this at least 3 times over, then pull tight on both ends to trap itself.

A short video of me creating the knot.

Clove Hitch

A Clove hitch is good for an anchor knot and can fix things firmly, mainly used to secure rope onto a stick and often used in the Forest School setting for tasks such as creating a frame.

Lay out the rope and create the word 'lee' in front of you.

Take the first 'e' you made and lay that on top of the second 'e'.

Place the item in the loops and pull both ends tightly.

Square Knot

A square knot is simply a way to join two ropes together.

Lay the two ropes next to each other as above.

Cross the two ropes over each other.

Loop the two ends above, one on top of the other.

Taking the rope that is led underneath, loop over the top and through the loop.

Pull tight to secure the ropes.

Sheer Lashing

A way to tie two branches together securely.

Start by attaching the rope to one branch using a clove hitch.

Lay another branch parallel with the first branch and start wrapping the rope, around and around until most of the rope has been used, leaving about metre free.

Once they are tightly connected, take the end and slot in between the two branches and lift up and over, wrap it round until only a small amount of rope left.

Finish off by tying the two ends together to hold tight.

Square Lashing

Binds two poles together at a 90 degree angle.

Lay two sticks over each other at a 90 degree angle. and creating a clove hitch on end of one of the branches.

Taking the working end of the rope, go over the right side of the branch laying on top and loop down underneath the lower branch. Looping back over the top branch and loop underneath the clove hitch. Repeat this until about a metre of spare rope left.

Take the rope and start wrapping around the rope, after first loop using your foot tighten the rope around the lashing, continue doing this until no rope left. Finally take the other end of the rope and tie securely together.

Half Hitch Knot

Used to tie rope around an object and back to itself.

With the two ends of the rope, cross the right end under the left.

Feed the right end through the loop created.

Pull Tight. Feed the right side rope under the left side again.

Feed the rope through the loop again and pull tight.

Creating another half hitch.
